As I listened today in class I found myself flipping through the chapters, adding more thoughts to those that were already there and underlining entirely new snippets that all of a sudden came clear as other discussed them. The following are four that I would like to work on. 1) Mindfulness. Slow down and take a moment to be mindful of others – stop and recognize the efforts of the maintenance director – take notice of a change in attitude of a staff member – be mindful of the small things that could change a student’s day – recognize sooner that something has changed. 2) Take Time. I used to say that I need to make time to do something, but it’s becoming clear to me that I’m not going to be able to ‘make’ that extra time, I need to take time – to actually take time during vacation breaks, take time to make dinner etc. taking this time will give back to me. 3) Listen Like a Cow. Be an active listener and listen people into existence. 4) They’re Your Buttons. This one is not necessarily for my own personal self, but for me to remind others from time to time that you control yourself not the person in which you are referring to. I know it's short, but realistically I think working on four aspects is a great place to start for now.
Nick,
ReplyDeleteThese are 4 very good points to consider. Just thing that if everyone were to put these 4 into part of their lives what a difference the world would be? Being in ag, do you find it difficult to talk with a cow? I have never tried a cow. My llamas have heard a few things and definately my dog, but not a cow!
These are really great points! When I get a chance I am going to print them out! Thanks for your insights and sharing -especially the buttons - I imagined in my mind They are my buttons and no one else should push them ;) I control me.
ReplyDeleteI once had many conversations with my market steers as I walked them down the canal bank. Now I just talk about them when I try to get students to describe why animal number 3 is superior to animal number 1. I also try not to hit them on my way to work...especially when it's dark.
