Funding is the biggest key to a school’s success and not in the amount of funding a district gets but how well they allocate those funds to meet their needs. Is the district able to allocate the funds to best serve its needs? Under the current system I would say no.
If schools can use money for their needs they will be more likely to succeed. When the state mandates the money be used very specific items it makes it harder for schools. The state simple can’t understand the needs of very district be able to accurately tell them how to spend their money. I bet most congressmen/women can’t even tell how schools in their towns are doing let alone over the entire state. The fact that these elected offices have to power to come into office and change everything is kind of ridiculous isn’t it? Then by the time it is discovered whether or not polices are working (or not) they will likely be replaced by the new group of politicians and the cycle starts all over again.
Districts should best know their needs and where to spend the state funds. If they don’t allocate funds appropriately, I don’t think the state should make a blanket policy and force other districts to change what works for them.
While on the topic of money, why in the world do we have to spend all the money we get every year? Can someone tell me if this is a state thing or a local decision? It really drives me crazy when I have to spend all the money in the department budget or lose it. Doesn’t it make more sense to be able to carry money over from year to year so you can save for larger purchases? Being able to save money from one school year to the next would allow teachers to better use the money instead of wastefully spending it so not lose funds next year.
