An idea that popped out to me in terms of what matters is can students use knowledge in new situations. I feel that students need to be able to apply the concepts and skills which are gained in the classroom to applications that students will face later on in life. Time in school will hopefully allow students the opportunity to develop their ability to manage tasks he/she may encounter in the future. I feel it will also be important that they can adapt to changes and social conditions. Could adding creativity to the classroom could be one way to help manage this problem?
It became evident that poverty is just one problem that has a correlation to low test results. While the research does seem to show that funding in high poverty schools is lower per student and could be link to poor performance. In addition these schools have trouble keeping staff or staff that is certified for the position in which he/she is teaching. When the education system decides to equalize the funding in these schools the districts need to use funding in appropriate ways to help increase student knowledge and learning in these schools. Does it mean implementing a set program? I don’t think so, but using components of a program or programs that fit the dynamics of the school would certainly be a sound idea to create a super program that works for school ‘X’.
Poverty also corresponds to having students enter the education system on varying levels. Not being an elementary educator I can only imagine the frustration level that one might experience. I also know that some of these students still suffer at the high school level. They could suffer for a variety of reasons, but I have noticed that parents don’t emphasize the importance of school and or students do not have an environment which they could study. A blaring TV can make it hard for some to focus and complete schoolwork. Getting parents to buy into the idea that an education is important would be helpful in these types of situations.
